HighlightScan with Auto-translation

Focus on understanding Chinese, not just rote memorization. Highlight a range of text to immediately see an Auto-translation and hear the passage read aloud  while you follow along with the Pinyin and English definitions. Imagine reading and understanding emails and websites. Focus your learning only on the words and content that's important to you. That's the power of augmented learning.

Understand Chinese by highlighting with your mouse

HighlightScan with Chinese Reader

Highlight text with your mouse and HighlightScan™ pops-up to help you understand the selected text. See the Auto-translation in English (or your choice of language). With AutoPronounce enabled, hear words read aloud in Mandarin Chinese (or optional Cantonese). In the Reading panel, follow the Pinyin or Bopomofo annotations. The Detail panel, similar to the LiveScan window, lets you focus on the details of each word. Tag words as a Favorite.

Tip: Due to the formatting on specific web pages, it may be easier to highlight text from right-to-left than from left-to-right.

Hear words pronounced on-demand

Hear the words pronounced over and over again--on your command

Review the pronunciation of any word(s). In the Reading panel, just click to hear any word read aloud.

  • Right-click and choose Pronounce to hear the word pronounced again
  • Press Ctrl+A to select all the words, then right-click and choose Pronounce to hear all the selected words pronounced

Settings for Auto-translation

MLK multi-language extensions for AutoTranslation

MLX Auto-Translation is powered by web services from Microsoft Bing and Google and subject to access and cost policies that are subject to change at any time. An internet connection is required. At this time, Bing is currently free; Google Translate is $30 per year for one million credits.

The best translations are performed by experienced individuals who are fluent in both Chinese and your target language (like English). Auto-translations provide a very rough approximation of the meaning. These machine-based translations are frequently incorrect, humorous--or both. Use the Auto-translation with the MDBG's dictionary-based definitions for a more accurate understanding of the text.

Customize the popup window to show only the items you want:

  • Enlarged view of Chinese (Simplified or Traditional)
  • Chinese shown in colors corresponding to tones (red, orange, green, blue, black)
  • Choice of Pinyin or Bopomofo phonetics--or both
  • Pinyin with tone marks or tone numbers
  • English meanings (customizable with Professional Edition)
  • HSK numbers corresponding to Chinese proficiency exam levels
  • Favorites (star) tagging
  • AutoPronounce™ reads the Chinese aloud in Mandarin or Cantonese (optional)
